COMIC-CON: THE X-FILES 20th Anniversary Panel

Thursday, July 18, 2013.  3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Ballroom 20.

  • FBI agents Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) entered a darkened Ballroom 20 wielding flashlights in the signature style of the iconic Vancouver-shot sci-fi series. Consensus on the 20th Anniversary panel and in the audience was the spooky pair should have had sex sooner. Fans wanted to know if  Scully and Mulder were ever in love. “I think it was when [Scully] first walked into [Mulder’s] office in that basement,” creator and showrunner Chris Carter said. David Duchovny concurred, saying Scully was Mulder’s fantasy woman — “strong, smart, opinionated, tough”. They had an intellectual relationship long before the romantic one. Anderson told fans she regrets not realizing that Mulder was “so cool” at the time their characters got together and later thought, “‘Damn, I should have gotten there sooner.”  The couple did have a child so there  must have been sex but the scene of them having it never made it to air. It’s lost somewhere.
  • Gillian Anderson spoke about Dana Scully being a role model for young woman for both her strong personality and what she stood for. Scully even encouraged more young women to go into science, Anderson said.
  • Creator Chris Carter said The X-Files is more relevant than ever and could be on the air now. “The suspicion and conspiracy theories are so much more rampant today,” he said.  But  no one seemed keen on a  new limited series like 24 is doing. Only if it’s a musical, joked Anderson about a possible season 9. She did express interest in a third X-Files film though nothing was announced or appears to be in development.
  • But, Anderson did auction off a standing cardboard poster of Scully and Mulder for charity at the end of the panel. “This is how we’re going to get the movie made,” Duchovny joked. “This is our Kickstarter,” Anderson agreed.
