SHOOT: DISNEY’s DESCENDANTS Dove Cameron, Mitchell Hope & Drone Camera in North Vancouver’s Lynn Canyon

Just a boy trying to impress a girl by jumping off a cliff. How do you impress a girl if you’re prince of present-day Auradon? Why not jump off a cliff into North Vancouver’s Lynn Canyon wearing your crown swimming shorts? Maleficent’s violet-haired daughter Mal watches from their picnic lunch as Ben, the son of Queen Belle and King Beast, leaps into the cold waters of the 30 Foot Pool. A stunt double did the actual jump although Mitchell Hope sure wanted to. He did the jungle roar and then ducked out of sight of the jump as a camera drone filmed the scene from above. This airborne drone meant spectatators had to retreat 100 metres for safety reasons so not much could be seen of the action. In a later scene, Mal (Dove Cameron) slips into the water and has to be saved by her prince.

Disney’s Descendants crew carried down the set and all their equipment about 200 steps to shoot two days worth of scenes in and around the 30 Foot Pool, a swimming hole packed with local kids and families in the summer heat.

King Beast (Dan Payne who lives in the neighbourhood) dropped by to see his TV son in action and then continued his run up the 200 steps.

What is this TV musical about? Ben’s first proclamation as he prepares to take the throne is to give amnesty to the teen descendants of banished Disney villains like Maleficent (Kristin Chenoweth), Jafar (Maz Jobrani), Cruella De Vil (Wendy Raquel Robinson) and the Evil Queen (Kathy Najimy) and ask them to join descendants of Disney heroes at the same prep school. What could go wrong? Spoiler alert: He falls for Maleficent’s daughter Mal. Other villain descendants include Jafar’s son Jay (Booboo Stewart), Cruella’s son Carlos (Cameron Boyce) and the Evil Queen’s daughter Evie (Sofia Carson). And hero descendants include Cinderella’s son Chad (Jedidiah Goodacre), Mulan’s daughter Lonnie (Dianne Doan), Sleeping Beauty’s daughter Audrey (Sarah Jeffery) and Dopey’s son Doug (Zachary Gibson) — all local actors — as well as the Fairy Godmother’s daughter Jane (Brenna D’Amico).
