Opening Night Gala: Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyers Club)’s Wild, starring Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, is the opening night gala on Thursday, September 25th, at the Centre for the Performing Arts. British novelist Nick Hornby adapted Cheryl Strayed’s memoir about leaving behind years of drug abuse and self-destruction with a solo, 1,000-mile hike across the Pacific Crest Trail.

Canadian Images Gala: Written and directed by Ruba Nadda, October Gale is the Canadian Images gala on Friday, September 27th, in the Centre for the Performing Arts. It stars Patricia Clarkson, Scott Speedman and Tim Roth and tells the story of a doctor who takes in a mysterious man with a gunshot wound who washes ashore at her cottage.

Special Presentation Gala: Director Yuya Ishii’s The Vancouver Asahi tells the story of Canadian-born Japanese kids in the 1930s who launched their own baseball team — the Asashi — in Vancouver’s old Japantown before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor changed everything. The director and actors Satoshi Tsumabuki and Kazuya Kamenashi will be in attendance at the gala on Monday, September 29th in the Centre for Performing Arts.

Closing Night Gala: American filmmaker Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash, starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons, is the closing night gala on Friday, October 10th, in the Centre for the Performing Arts. It’s about an up-and-coming jazz drummer (Teller) pushed to his breaking point by an instructor (Simmons). Sundance Grand Jury and Audience Award winner.

BC Spotlight: Thirteen BC  films — three comedies, six dramas and four documentaries.
