Despite a two-year delay and a big write down, $100-million Seventh Son is not wholly dependent on its North American box office this weekend. Universal has already shown the dark fantasy in Europe, China and other regions taking in $80 million so far. Still, it’s been almost three years since Seventh Son filmed in the greater Vancouver area in various locations including its gigantic medieval castle set on Kent Hangar field. That’s a long time for a big-budget movie to not be released (the bankruptcy of its VFX house Rhythm & Hues contributed to the two-year delay). Dismal reviews suggest it’s a movie that doesn’t work which is unfortunate considering all the talent in and behind it.

Adapted from Joseph Delaney’s The Wardstone Chronicles series, Seventh Son is about a Falcon Knight named Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges), who imprisoned an evil witch Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) centuries ago. When she escapes, Gregory has until the next blood moon to train apprentice Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) — the seventh son of a seventh son — to fight her dark magic. Other characters: Billy Bradley (Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington) and Alice (Alicia Vikander).
