Seattle secret service agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) comes to fictional Idaho town Wayward Pines (played by Agassiz’s Pioneer Avenue set) to investigate the disappearance of two federal agents when a car crash leaves him bloodied and disoriented.
He stumbles down the main street (filmed on the 2013 Labour Day weekend in Agassiz with M. Night Shyamalan on set directing the pilot).
After collapsing, he wakes up in hospital (played by Coquitlam’s Riverview Hospital) as the only patient of an evil Nurse Pam (Melissa Leo).
A bartender Beverly (Juliette Lewis) tries to help.
A ruthless Sheriff Arnold Pope (Terrence Howard) obstructs.
The missing agent is Burke’s former secret service partner Kate Hewson (Carla Gugino) — who almost broke up his marriage — but she turns up alive and well at a Wayward Pines picnic (on the Agassiz set). What is going on?
Apparently there’s a good reason why an entire town is acting “weird and off centre” and can never leave. And it’s the dark humour of Blake Crouch’s novels that drew director M. Night Shyamalan to the 10-episode event series. Other cast includes Toby Jones and local actor Sarah Jeffery.
