Update: Warcraft set records in China with a 4-day $150-million-plus opening.
Warcraft — the movie adaption of the popular video game — is opening big overseas, with an expected $30 million launch. This Game of Thrones meets Avatar-style movie is a mix of live-action and computer-generated imagery (CGI) and tells the story of humans and orcs in Azeroth, with sword-wielding human hero Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel) and hammer-wielding Orc hero Durtan (Toby Kebbell) as the central characters. Directed by Duncan Jones, the film co-stars Clancy Brown (Sleepy Hollow), Dominic Cooper (Captain America: First Avenger), Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim/Second Chance), and Daniel Wu (Hong Kong movie star) as humans or orcs, along with local actors Ryan Robbins, Daniel Cudmore and Dan Payne.
Vancouver’s own Ryan Robbins.
Warcraft’s biggest market is expected to be China.
Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) created the worlds with a little help from metro Vancouver as a backdrop.
