The CW picked up the Archie comics pilot Riverdale to series today. The contemporary live-action series subverts the Archie comics wholesome image in surreal ways. Betty Cooper (Lil Reinhart) starts off sweet with a crush on Archie Andrews (newcomer KJ Apa) as in the comics but chucks it all after turning to new BFF Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) for advice. And Jughead Jones (The Suite Life of Zach & Cody’s Cole Sprouse) is an emo-heartthrob — a Bae — estranged from his former BFF Archie (Apa) — aka “Justin Gingerlake”.
Madelaine Petsch is Cheryl Blossom, whose twin brother dies. Ashleigh Murray is Josie of Josie & the Pussycats. Ross Butler is Reggie, a prankster and drunk. Casey Cott is openly gay student Kevin Keller. Mädchen Amick is Betty’s Mom Alice Cooper. Marisol Nichols is Veronica’s Mom Herimone Lodge. And 90210 heartthrob Luke Perry is Archie’s Dad Fred Andrews.

Riverdale filmed all over metro Vancouver in March: at several high schools as Riverdale High, at a Pop’s set in Mission Golden Ears Park, at Mountain View Cemetery, in downtown Vancouver and Fort Langley.
