Joel Kinnaman stars as Takeshi Kovacs, the last of the interstellar warriors known as the Envoys, who after 500 years in dark storage has his consciousness downloaded into a new body (sleeve) in the San Francisco of the 25th Century. Kovacs must solve a single murder in a world where death is almost obsolete or return to the eternal darkness of the cortical stack. Based on Richard Morgan’s cyberpunk book, Altered Carbon is a 10-episode series for Netflix.

Altered Carbon has built giant sets in Skydance Media’s new Surrey film studio Skydance Studios which converted the former Province and Vancouver Sun printing press into a five sound-stage studio.
“They’re really going to be able to create a world that’s got a bigger budget than the first three seasons of Game of Thrones,” Joel Kinnaman told Yahoo News. “It’s going to be something special. It’s something that’s never been done before, and I’m a big fan of intelligent sci-fi. To see a sci-fi show that’s a hard R-rated sci-fi show with a big budget, so they’re really going to be able to create this entire world … I just started drooling at that possibility.”

Production cancelled the Queen Elizabeth Park shoot. Weather too grey. Will postpone to Spring when the trees have leaves. Filmed in downtown Vancouver’s Canada Post building instead.

Altered Carbon is expected to start filming today and wrap June 20th next year (dates subject to change) with the working title Sleeves.
