Historical thriller The Order, starring Jude Law as an FBI agent and Nicholas Hoult as a white supremacist leader in the 1980s Pacific Northwest, premieres at the Venice Film Festival.
Adapted from the book The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, The Order tells the story of one of the most dangerous hate groups in America since the Ku Klux Klan.
The year is 1983. A series of bank robberies and car heists plague the Pacific Northwest. Believing these crimes to be connected to a white supremacist organization, FBI Agent Huss (Jude Law) undertakes an investigation with the aid of an eager young small-town deputy (Tye Sheridan).
Their search leads them to Bob Mathews (Nicholas Hoult), a charismatic cult leader recruiting a small army to raise funds for an armed revolution. As their paths bring them into ever-closer proximity, Huss and Mathews’ powerful convictions will ensure only one of them will emerge from their inevitable confrontation.
Screen adversaries Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult did not speak or interact with one other for the first four weeks of filming in Alberta in order to build distance between them, Hoult revealed at the. Venice Film Festival press conference.
Director Justin Kurzel even asked Nicholas Hoult to stalk Jude Law for a day without Law knowing.
Asked at the press conference about the film’s relevance in today’s politically and culturally-divided America, Jude Law responded: “Sadly, the relevance speaks for itself. It felt like a piece of work that needed to be made now..”
