The construction department built the wall pretty much the same way the Jackson residents would have built it. It’s all solid lumber and trees. — Callum Webster, Art Director.
The Last of Us built the Jackson town set and its timbered wall in eleven weeks in the late Fall of 2023 and early Winter of 2024 on a gravel pit in Minaty Bay, British Columbia– ahead of season 2’s February 2024 start of production.
The Jackson Wall Set at Minaty Bay, BC:
I stopped by the private set in late December 2023 before the wall was built but you could see the logs piled on the ground.

The finished wall.

The gates weigh about 1,800 tons each. It’s engineered, approved.

It’s got to be able to take the amount of extras actors and crew members on top of the wall. We have a lot of special effects, barrel shoots unfolding . There’s stunt people running into the wall.

The wall is my favourite [set]. It’s massive — Rutina Wesley (Maria).

The Jackson town set at Minaty Bay:
Canmore, Alberta, played the walled community of Jackson in season one but when production moved from Alberta to British Columbia for season two, The Last of Us decided it needed to build its own Jackson from the ground up.
Season one, Jackson was a town that existed, that we shot in that was very beautiful and natural. But…for season two they built everything. — Rutina Wesley (Maria).

The construction crew built new Jackson through Winter at Minaty Bay beside the Sea to Sky Highway north of Vancouver.
The building of Jackson was nothing short of insanity. I couldn’t believe what the team pulled off — game creator and co-showrunner Neil Druckmann.
The finished Jackson set is the equivalent of two full city blocks with cross streets, including the wall, gate and 45 buildings built to various levels of internal finish, reports Vulture..

The wall, gate and guard towers are at the other end of the set.

It just helps the authenticity of the show. It’s just different when you can stand in it and feel it. — Neil Druckmann.

You can walk inside buildings. You can walk out onto verandas. You can go upstairs to the second floor.
Gabriel Luna’s Tommy Miller led the defence of Jackson against a horde of Infected.
It’s a special special set. The details are all there. And you just step on, check your imagination at the door and just live in it because it’s all there. — Gabriel Luna (Tommy Miller).
