On next Sunday’s season 2 episode of The Last of Us, Bella Ramsey’s Ellie and Isabela Merced’s Dina ride through Vancouver Island’s Nanaimo dressed as post-fungal pandemic Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighbourhood.
Episode four: Day One.
In Seattle, Ellie and Dina find themselves amid a brutal battle between the zealous Seraphites and a ruthless militia.
In real-life, Capitol Hill is a diverse district centred around Volunteer Park where Seattle’s gay community and others enjoy local cafes, high-end restaurants and stores.
In the HBO series, Ellie and Dina are puzzled by the fading and frayed remnants of Capitol Hill’s Pride Festival. in 2003 — the year the Cordyceps fungal infection spread across America, turning infected people into monsters and pitting survivors against one another.
Pride displays are not part of their world.

After weeks of prep,The Last of Us shot for only two days in downtown Nanaimo — on May 13th and 14th last year.
Danny Virtue’s ranch in Mission had two horses on set playing Shimmer, both very well-trained and able to perform for hours without a break.
The Shimmer of the day became a local attraction at lunch at its horse trailer on Bastion Street.
