Common People is a frightening examination of life-saving health care distorted by the subscription model.

When a medical emergency leaves schoolteacher Amanda (Rashida Jones) fighting for her life, her desperate husband Mike (Chris O’Dowd) signs her up for Rivermind, a high-tech system that will keep her alive.

But there’s a catch. The price tag for the life-saving Rivermind tech means that over time the couple can’t afford it unless she becomes a walking pop-up ad.

Creator Charlie Brooker’s inspiration: “I’ve often been struck by how you’d be listening to a podcast and the hosts would suddenly go into an ad sales pitch seamlessly.” — Vulture.

Starring Rashida Jones as Amanda, Chris O’Dowd as Mike, and Tracee Ellis Ross as Gaynor from Rivermind.

Amanda’s classroom collapse was filmed at Queen Elizabeth Elementary in Vancouver’s Point Grey area last September.
