R.T. Thorne’s dystopian thriller 40 Acres, starring American actor Danielle Deadwyler, won every award it was nominated for at the Canadian Screen Awards except Best Motion Picture.
In a post-apocalyptic future where food is scarce, the last descendants of a Black family of farmers who settled in Canada after the American Civil War must protect their homestead from an organized militia hell-bent on taking their land.

The 10 Canadian Screen Awards nominations came the same week that 40 Acres became a surprise hit on Netflix — making the global streamer’s Top 10 Movies for two weeks and racking up more than 10 million views.
At the Canadian Screen Awards gala, R.T. Thorne won the John Dunning Best First Feature Film Award and two other awards for Achievement in Direction and Best Original Screenplay
And there were other awards for casting, cinematography, art direction and production design, stunt coordination, music and sound editing.
That’s 9.
But Best Motion Picture went to Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie.
