Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 is expected to be a sequel to James Cameron’s Aliens with Sigourney Weaver returning as Ellen Ripley and Michael Biehn as marine Dwayne Hicks. Talk is the Vancouver-based sci-fi director of acclaimed District 9 (filmed in his native South Africa) could begin shooting Alien 5 in metro Vancouver as early as this Fall. How did this happen? Fox greenlit the movie after seeing Neill Blomkamp’s concept art on Instagram earlier this year. He described it as s “a mental stroll into the world Ridley Scott created”.
In Aliens, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) was discovered drifting in space after 57 years in hypersleep. Her claim that an alien killed her crew and forced the destruction of the Weyland company ship Nostromo are treated with skepticism until Weyland loses contact with its human colony on the planet where Nostromo was last reported.
Alien 5 should pick up after these events, ignoring David Fincher’s Alien 3 with a bald Ripley and aliens on a prison planet and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien: Resurrection with a cloned Ripley and kidnapped humans used to breed aliens aboard a ship bound for Earth.
The latest films in the Alien franchise are prequels Prometheus and Prometheus 2.
