Is Vancouver the genre capital of the world? Sometimes it seems that way, like when the Saturn Awards announced this year’s special awards honourees earlier this week: Vancouver’s own timey-wimey series Continuum; showrunner Carlton Cuse of filmed-in-BC Bates Motel and The Returned (since cancelled), Grant Gustin star of shot-in-Vancouver DC adaption The Flash and Noah Wyle, star of filmed-in-Vancouver Falling Skies.

Simon Barry’s time-travelling Continuum will be honoured with a Special Recognition Award for its ripped-from-the-news series about future police officer Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols) who gets swept up in an escape from 2077 by “terrorists” Liber8 who set out to change the future from the present by targeting the corporations that will come to rule the world. Always the good soldier in the future, Kiera adjusts her moral compass in the third season and comes to the conclusion that her beloved future is not a great future at all and therefore not worth protecting.
