SHOOT: Hallmark’s CHESAPEAKE SHORES Turns Steveston into Maryland not Maine for Meghan Ory, Laci J Mailey & Treat Williams

Updated and revised.

Hallmark Channel picked up Chesapeake Shores to series filming from May 16th to July 20th (dates subject to change) in metro Vancouver.

Steveston isn’t playing Storybrooke today. The Storybrooke Public Library has become the Chesapeake Shores Bank for the pilot movie of an upcoming Hallmark TV series, starring Meghan Ory from Once Upon a Time. Confused yet?

Adapted from Sheryl Woods’s 10-book series, Chesapeake Shores is about the multi-generational Maryland O’Brien family. Abby O’Brien Winter (Meghan Ory), a divorced, mother of twins returns home to the Maryland town her father (Treat William) built after years in a demanding Wall Street job. The charming Inn at Eagle Point that her younger sister Jess (Laci J Mailey) renovated is facing foreclosure. Abby needs to save the Inn, deal with her fractured family and face Trace Riley (Jesse Metcalfe), the man she left 10 years ago. Is Trace a second chance at love? Meghan Ory and Jesse Metcalfe co-starred in Dead Rising: Watchtower.

Chesapeake Shores will be back tomorrow afternoon for  interior scenes at 3551 Moncton Street as the Chesapeake Shores Bank, followed by walk-and-talk scenes on the boardwalk at the fishing docks tomorrow evening until around midnight.

This would make the fourth Hallmark series to film in metro Vancouver and Victoria — the other three are Cedar Cove with Andie MacDowell, When Calls the Heart with Erin Krakow and Signed, Sealed, Delivered with Eric Mabius.

  1. I’ve read every book by Sherryl Woods and am looking forward to seeing the adaptation to a Hallmark series. Thank-you Hallmark for the wonderful work you do!!

    1. My name is Rhonda Collins and I also would like to thank you,you at Hallmark to an Amazing job with all you’re movies and you always seem to pick the most talented actors for the rolls in the business. I’m from Placerville and you shot a movie here about some adorable puppies thank you for coming to our Historical little town alot of film makers come here to shoot it’s exciting, I tried to be an extra in one a few months ago but the wouldn’t even speak to me,gezzzz some people right? Anyways thank you again for all you do

    1. Don’t know. It will be a movie first and then possibly a series. With the disappointing cancellation of Cedar Cove there is room for a new series on Hallmark Channel.

  2. Why would a film/show based on a MD town be filmed elsewhere? MD has a few gorgeous small towns that would be ideal for a movie setting- remember Berlin was the setting for the fictitious town in Runaway Bride! Easton, MD comes to mind as a lovely backdrop for this particular need.

Maybe I’m partial being from MD originally, but a show or film titled Chespeake Shores should actually be near the Chesapeake! I will still be tuning in to watch, it sounds like a fabulous plot with a great cast.

    1. Maryland doesn’t have a big production centre. Closest ones are Wilmington, North Carolina and New York City. But Vancouver is probably cheaper and still has a wonderful coast and villages which can look a bit like Maine or Maryland or other places on the east coast. Hallmark has so many TV movies and series filming here that they trust they can get a new series on screen on time and on budget. Wish stories could be filmed in the places they’re set but it rarely happens. Adds something special when it does.

      1. The scenery looks nothing like Maryland. I’ve read all the books. Very disappointing. Should have been filmed in Annapolis. Lots of filming has been done there.

      2. Judy from Chesapeake Bay Country.

Duh!!! Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay does not have mountains. It is extremely insulting to those of us who have roots near the Chesapeake Bay to see this beautiful area of the country falsely depicted! Didn’t anyone on your staff study Geography? I won’t be watching this absurdity, that’s for sure. Oh, and someone told me about the scene were everyone chowed down on Alaskan crab legs. I am shaking my head. This is really one for the stupidity list. Everyone in Maryland is laughing at Hallmark.

        1. Thank you, that’s what I’ve been saying, there are no mountains on the Chesapeake Shore!!! Looks like this family lives in the Pacific Northwest with the scenery!! They would be better off filming in Wilmington, North Carolina, no mountains and water scenes would look more realistic to Maryland.

        2. I read the entire series and so enjoyed it, and in no way did the setting in my mind look the way this place looks. So Pacific Northwest (as others have noted). Jess’s bed and breakfast also is nothing like I imagined. Just takes away a bit in trying to reference things, comparing one to the other. It wouldn’t matter at all if I hadn’t read the books first.

      3. Fact is Canada has made it VERY appealing for film crews to shoot there. They require a lot less overhead than the US does. They also use Canadian actors (if anyone noticed, so there could be a reason/benefit to filming there. CAN doesn’t require all the permits, police, ambulance and everything else. Also, they don’t have to deal with all the union demands the US does. I don’t think they could afford to produce all the series/movies they do if they filmed in the US. Personally, I would prefer they keep producing all the how’s they do, rather than cut back to be in US.

      4. You cannot eliminate the mountains in the background……that DO NOT exist in Maryland or Maine!!!!!!! The whole landscape is just wrong. Do it right, or don’t do it.

      5. Scenes in this show look nothing like Maryland especially when they show high mountains on the horizon. Ever been on the Chesapeake Bay?

      6. I live in Chesapeake Beach and I had to laugh, it looks NOTHING like the show! And I went to film school so it’s actually frustrating for me personally bc the production designer is in charge of locations. It’s sad how excited I was to see this out of the blue and how it looks nothing like this town at all! But still so far a great show!

      7. The outdoor shots in Chesapeake Shores look NOTHING like coastal Maryland! The mountains are out of place, the trees are completely different and the waterfront looks totally different. The Chesapeake waterfront is made up of marshes, this could pass for Maine, but as Maryland, it’s ridiculous.

    2. I live in Berlin, Maryland, and am also saddened that the show is not being filmed in Maryland. People viewing the show will be searching for a fictitious town, that doesn’t exist in Maryland or even in the Unites States, for that matter.

      1. I live in Maryland also, there is a town in Maryland called Chesapeake shores that’s in Lexington Park, md, and Eagles Nest is in the Ranch Estates.

        1. No, in Lexington Park, Maryland there is a nursing home called Chesapeake Shores, but you are still right about a real community called Chesapeake Shores in Maryland – it is in St. Leonard, Maryland in Calvert County (I live in St. Mary’s County).

      2. Everyone needs to relax. Do you think there was a Cabot Cove, Maine. No. murder She Wrote was filmed in CA. I think people are smart enough too figure out that it’s not the same place. All you have to do is Google “where is Chesapeake Shores filmed?” and it comes right up. I didn’t assume it was actually filmed there. I have lived/worked several places and to be honest, it is a royal pain. Streets close, businesses lose business when filing is happening because people struggle to get to them, etc. Filming really on locale isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. And people still might investigate and get people thinking about Chesapeake Bay. I have spend lots of time in several areas around and on the Bay over the years, and loved it. I am sure people who really care to do their homework will still come if they want to.

        1. Absolutely agree about St. Michael’s! A little disappointed in location. Definitely should be in Maryland on The Eastern ashore, which is gorgeous!

    3. I totally agree… Watching now & anyone who knows MD & the areas along the bay know the backgrounds etc are not along the bay.
I can think of many small wonderful MD towns near or around the bay, Rock Hall, Galena, Solomons etc
      what a shame !!

    4. I live on Vancouver Island, Canada. Where Chesapeake Shores is partially filmed.. We have one of the most gorgeous places to live in the world..If you have not googled our area yet,I invite you to do so. We call Vancouver Island….paradise!!!
…The best place on earth to live 🙂 🙂

      1. It isn’t about the beauty of where you are. It is about the fact that it is NOTHING like the eastern shore of MD. That is the issue. Watching Season 2 epi 1 now, and they are in coats. That would NEVER happen in MD during the summer. Such a shame.

  3. I am looking forward also, but mostly hope the writers stick closer to the actual books than they did for Cedar Cove. I believe that was the demise to cedar cove- taking our beloved characters and not following storyline from the books. It ultimately lost viewers. Please do not disappoint!

  4. They will be filming on Vancouver Island in a small seaside community. Less busy then Vancouver and small town feel. Should be fun to watch.

  5. I have been a Marylander all my life and in the previews of Chesapeake Shores I saw a mountain and I know for a fact there’s no mountains around the Chesapeake Bay very disappointing it’s being filmed outside the beautiful Chesapeake Bay

    1. And they were eating King Crab legs, not Maryland Blue Crab… I like the show so far, but as a Maryland girl, this ain’t Maryland or the shores of my Chesapeake Bay!

      1. Lol amen! My husband was in the room when I was watching and he even commented about the snow crab legs. The only time we eat snow crab legs is at a buffet. It is whole steamed blue crabs for us.

  6. Hey Hallmark, love your movies, but come on already with the bogus filming places and fake snow. What “Loser” executive signs off on filming the new Chesapeake Shores series in Vancouver, Canada? Isn’t the book series based upon a family from Chesapeake, MD? What’s that like some 2000 miles away from Vancouver? Also, what’s with the fake snow and trees in full bloom with your Christmas movies? I don’t know which is worse. Please stop insulting your audience and make your movies when and where they are billed. Thank you.

  7. Watched the show last night. Obviously not Maryland and when the father said he had fresh crabs for dinner they were crab legs not BLUE CRABS!!! Totally clueless writers and directors

  8. I completely agree with a lot I’ve read about not filming in MD. We do have the ability and resources to file here in MD. There have been quite a few series and movies filmed here. After watching the primer episode, it makes since to me know why they were wearing jackets and boots, the weather is 90 degrees here. And yes, completely picked up on the crabs. If you are going to fake MD, please do it right!!! Was so wishing it was actually being filmed on one of the Chesapeake Shores that encompass MD.

    1. Haha. I have always wondered where this magical place was where people wear sweaters to a 4th of July celebration. Not near the Chesapeake bay. It is too hot and humid for that around here. If models can shoot swimsuit specials in the dead of winter, they could at least wear sundresses or tank tops for shooting a supposed summer scene. I get cold pretty easily and even summer nights here I have never needed so much as a cardigan.

      1. Judy from Chesapeake Bay Country.

Oh Lord, another one to add to the list. It is 90 to 100 degrees in The Chesapeake Bay Maryland area around the 4th of July.

Dear, Lord..take me off of this stupid carnival ride……..

  9. Exactly. Fake snow, different foliage, wrong types of food and especially ‘steam’ coming from the actors’ breath during ‘summer scenes’ is not only disappointing and distracting but causes me to no longer want to watch. Lowers the quality which is unfortunate as mostly, Hallmark Movies are consistently ‘B’ films.

  10. I totally agree with the disappointment in learning that Chesapeake Shores was filmed in Vancouver, not even in the US. It may be a interesting series, but I was excited to watch it since I have lived in Md my entire life and have had many trips to the Eastern Shore. This series is Not at all what I expected!

    1. Judy from Chesapeake Bay Country.

OMG, your post was hilarious! Yeah, I love seeing fake snow on full leafy trees myself, puts me in the Christmas mood. At the next 4th of July event by the Chesapeake Bay I attend, I will bring the Alaskan crab legs and a big old cardigan.

They really don’t care if they insult our intelligence, do they?

  11. I tuned in to see this movie because of the title and the fact that I live on the Chesapeake Bay. When I saw the mountainsame and pine trees in the background, it ruined the movie for me. The landscape is NOTHING like the Chesapeake shores. Disappointed.

  12. You’ll have a low viewership from the Chesapeake Bay states for your fake
location selection. It’s like using a cane pole and float to go deep sea fishing.

  13. Yes being a true Marylander for 63 years found it very disappointing that Hallmark filmed in Vancouver and had the characters eating snow crab legs instead of steamed crabs (local blue crabs)!

  14. The Chesapeake Bay areas have some of the most beautiful places in the country. The Pulitzer Award writer James Michener, who has traveled all over the world and written books on the many places wrote or included them in his fictitious novels, once said that in order to write a true story, one must live in the area and know the history. He stayed in the Chesapeake area as he wrote the book, and said that out of all the places he visited, the Chesapeake Bay area was the most beautiful and best place to be. I am so sorry and disappointed to find out that Hallmark found it unnecessary to film Chesapeake Shores in Maryland, and am more disappointed that they chose a place outside of the United States. I love the Hallmark Channel, but stories like this make me want to no longer view any of their shows. If it is good enough to make a series, then it should be good enough to film the series where they take place. At least all the outside shots could have been filmed in Maryland, and then they could have built buildings, etc., someplace else to film the rest. NOT A GOOD CHOICE.

When he wrote his book Chesapeake, he stayed in the Chesapeake area as he wrote the book. Afterwards in and interview he said that out of all the places he visited, the Chesapeake Bay area was the most beautiful and best place to be. Chesapeake was also one of the most successful books he wrote. 2. I’m a Marylander, and am also disappointed that it was filmed in the PNW, instead of on the east coast. Don’t get me wrong–I love the PNW, but it just cannot pass for every region. From the first views of the scenery I knew if had to be near Vancouver so I googled and found this thread. The story is good though, so I’ll keep watching!

  15. It is insulting trying to pass off the Pacific Northwest as the Mid-Atlantic. A few aerial shots of Baltimore doesn’t cut it. At least try to be more convincing.

  16. The Characters appear to be exactly like the imagines I conjured from reading the series, which I love. I just saw the first of the series and was disappointed to learn that the filming of the series is in Vancouver. I’m a Maryland girl so it was easy to spot things that wouldn’t pertain to living in Maryland. I am however, looking forward to watching the series and very pleased with the likeness of the characters book to movie.

  17. Nothing is right about this show. I’m originally from Baltimore and spent many summers all over the Chesapeake Bay area, one end to the other. Was excited to watch the show. But, from the beginning nothing looked anything like my beloved Bay. The wrong trees, topography, Snow crabs(??? For God’s sake!), logs on beaches; nothing like the Chesapeake. All this Imitation Chesapeake is a distraction. There are so many beautiful towns and locales where this could have been filmed all over the Chesapeake.. All this is so distracting and just plain wrong. Always have enjoyed Hallmark stories but there is so much that is so phony about Chesapeake Shores.

  18. My love for the Chesapeake Bay drew me to this series, at least it did until I realized after five minutes of watching, that the setting resembled a small town in…CANADA. Not so interested in watching anymore. Perhaps TPTB will figure out part of the attraction to this series is the ambience of the Chesapeake Bay and relocate to a more believable area.

  19. I am a Marylander living in Tennessee and was so looking forward to seeing the sights of home. Not so excited to watch anymore. ( I also saw the mountain in the background)

  20. Following up on “totally clueless writers”, did anyone catch in the show that aired tonight that when Trace was speaking to Abby’s father, he said it had been 16 years since they were together. Then in a following scene, while Trace is speaking to Abby on the phone, the dog barks and Abby says she misses him, Trace replying that the dog misses her too. That’s some old dog!

  21. I just a preview for this show and was curious because I had lived in the Delmarva/ Eastern Shore region for a few years, and still come down to the town of North East, MD every week to visit my son. I too was hoping this show would be filmed in the many towns I’ve ventured to and enjoyed going to, but major disappointment as well!

I mean films such as Runaway Bride being filmed in Berlin and Wedding Crashers filmed in St. Michaels.

I really feel that they should have a chose potential towns like Easton, Chestertown, Kent Island, North East, and so forth. Being a Jersey resident, its cool to take friends around to show off where differents films and shows were filmed in the area according to the story, and doing the same while traveling with friends and family to Maryland to do the same. This show just ruins that now! 🙁

  22. Born raised and lived in md all my life. They need to change the name of the show. Base it on the books but call in something else. What their showing is an insalt to md. I won’t watch it but will bad mouth it. To file a show on books about the lives of people of the chesapeake bay regin an show crap, filmed, that looks nothing like the regin is a major insalt to every one that would watch it an not know their not seeing md.

    1. I agree! I was raised in Ft Meade Md and Annapolis is one of the towns I see in this show. Yes they made a few mistakes but it is tv. I dated and married a midshipmen and so miss the cheasapeak bay it is a beautiful place, the show does take me back home love it!!!!

  23. I have been watching the show but in the first episode I said that is not Maryland and not my beloved Chesapeake Bay. That disappoints me. I think St. Michaels would have a nice little town to see the cast walking around and shopping.

  24. In the pilot the grandfather was building a retirement community. Then in the next episode he died when he was 58. And the dog went from an Irish setter to a German shepherd. The bed and breakfast is completely different, too. Where’s the continuity expert, Hallmark?

  25. I lived in Md for 18 yrs and still visit there as my daughter & grandsons live there. I feel that Maryland is still my home and plan to move back there. Upon hearing that a series based on the Chesapeake Bay was coming to the Hallmark channel I was so excited to be able to see that most beautiful part of the Eastern Shore without having to leave my living room in Ohio. However so VERY disappointed. It’s all fake Anyone who has ever lived in Maryland is going to feel like they have been tricked into watching this series. Filming outside referenced areas from a novel seems almost like plagiarism. Not to mention that it’s NOT giving viewers a true vision of the areas beauty landmarks. It’s like reading a book that really isn’t telling a story at all. What an insult to Marylanders. I can’t watch it it’s nothing like The Gorgeous Chesapeake Bay. The producers/directors have taken a quality book & destroyed its credibility.

  26. I am also disappointed in the fact that the show is not filmed in MD. I would also like to say there is to long of time between seasons and people can easily forget about the show. Cedar Cove was a great show but I completely lost interest.

  27. I agree that St. Michaels, etc. are beautiful, but it probably came down to cost. MD is TOO EXPENSIVE…especially compared to Canada. Hallmark is a low-budget channel. I agree they could have used blue crabs (that should have been an easy fix)…or they could have said the series was based on the books but set in the NW, not Mid-Atlantic.

  28. WOW, people you all need to get a grip and understand that TV is not reality. Many movies and TV shows are written as if they are from a specific city but are filmed elsewhere. In many cases this is simply due to keep costs down, sometimes they have to accommodate a cast member, for example the X-Files was basically supposed to be set in DC but they filmed most of it in Canada for years and then they moved it Los Angeles because one of the stars of the show wanted to be closer to his new wife and threatened to quit if they refused. When you sit down to watch a show on TV keep in mind it ain’t real so get over it.

    1. I totally agree with your comment Dave. Well said. I guess some people just have to have something to complain about. Opinions are one thing but complaints can be extreme in some cases such as this and seem quite shallow. Maybe they need to think more like the glass is half full instead of empty. Lol

  29. I know that it’s not real, but the show is missing an opportunity to showcase a beautiful part of the country not often seen in film or TV. Those dismissing location have a shallow understanding of what a setting is. An appropriate setting is often a significant character in a story. In Chesapeake Shores the character of the bay is missing, and those of us who plainly see this are correct in pointing it out.

  30. I cannot watch this show because it has none of the feel of the Chesapeak. It is just another movie using the wrong setting. It has lost the heart of the book. It shouts Pacific northwest not Maryland eastern shore. Get to know the people of the eastern shore before you try to protray them. Have the producers ever been to the eastern shore?

  31. I am actually headed to the east coast this fall to enjoy the scenery there and appreciate all it has to offer that us midwesterners don’t normally get to experience. I understand wanting a show to be more realistic but remember it is television after all so I agree with Dave Jensen, get a grip! I won’t be disappointed if it doesn’t look the same and I’m not an avid reader so I don’t relate to the book reference in one of the comments. Although I respect those who are, I just don’t feel it offensive whatsoever for example being from the Midwest, if the Ozarks and that content isn’t depicted correctly as they are at times in books and movies which I have encountered occasionally. I just enjoy watching Chesapeake Shores as I did Cedar Cove and most everything else on Hallmark even if it isn’t true to the environment which really most people wouldn’t even know if they weren’t from there. It’s just clean tv and a heck of a lot better than the crap they have on most channels now days. So what’s so wrong with a decent series whether it’s authentic to its story or not? I say Hallmark keep up the good work and keep the family friendly shows coming!!!
