Van Helsing has found its Vanessa Helsing in Kelly Overton (True Blood). The newly created character is the daughter of the vigilante vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing, whom Bram Stroker originated in his 1897 novel Dracula. Resurrected five years into the future, Vanessa Helsing discovers that vampires rule the world and she’s humanity’s last hope to take it back from them. Vancouver’s own Christopher Heyerdahl is Sam, a survivor of the vampire rising; David Cubitt is another survivor John and Jonathan Scarfe is career marine Axel, according to Deadline Hollywood. The 13-episode series begins shooting in metro Vancouver next week.

Filmmaker/playwright Neil LaBute (In the Company of Men) is the showrunner and Vanouver’s own Simon Barry (Continuum) an executive producer with Nomadic Pictures. Syfy has acquired the American rights for the series which will debut September 2016.

Filming begins February 22nd and wraps June 27th (dates subject to change), according to Directors Guild of Canada-BC production list.
