Update:
Snowpiercer premiered big on May 17th as 2020’s top new entertainment program on cable, with 3.3 million viewers for its premiere and two replays on TNT and TBS.

Inspired by Oscar-winner Bong Joon Ho’s futuristic 2013 thriller with Chris Evans, the Snowpiercer series takes place seven years after a post-apocalyptic Ice Age — the Freeze– aboard a 1001-car, perpetually moving train that circles the globe with the rich at the Front and the poor at the Tail end.
In the TNT series, Train managers Melanie Cavill (Jennifer Connelly) and Ruth Wardle (Alison Wright) at the Front end recruit former homicide detective Andre Layton (Daveed Diggs) from the Tail end to investigate a sadistic murder.
The investigation gives the “Tailie” the means to move between the Classes and access to formerly forbidden areas.

Snowpiercer premieres May 17th on TNT and May 25th on Netflix outside the U.S.

Jennifer Connelly is Melanie Cavill at the Front in First Class, the Voice of the Train and Train Manager & the real Mr. Wilford.
Daveed Diggs is “tailie” Andre Layton at the Tail end of the train, a former police detective who is about to lead an uprising at the train’s tail when he is summoned to the front of the train to investigate a murder.
Jaylin Fletcher is Miles, one of the few children in the Tail and smart enough to move forward as an apprentice.
Alison Wright (The Americans) is Ruth Wardle, second in command to Head of Hospitality Melanie Cavill (Connelly) and dedicated enforcer of Mr. Wilford and the Order that defines the train’s class system.
(The fur coat is a nod to Tilda Swinton’s Minister Mason in the Bong Joon Ho film).
Mickey Sumner is brakeman Bess Till, part of the train’s security force.
Lena Hail is Miss Audrey in the Night Car.
Sheila Vand is Zarah, Layton’s ex, in the Night Car.
Iddo Goldberg is Bennett, an engineer who designed the train and knows its secrets.

Why the long delay?
TNT ordered the Snowpiercer pilot in late 2016. The pilot filmed in Vancouver in the Fall of 2017. And TNT picked it up to series in January, 2018. Original showrunner Josh Friedman exited not long after and Graeme Manson (Orphan Black) replaced him.
“It takes a long time to make really good sh*t,” Daveed Diggs said at this year’s Winter TCA event.
“It had a long birth. It’s a really great property, I’m a huge fan of director Bong ’s movie and huge fan of the graphic novels, and it took a long time to get it right and we got it right,” Graeme Manson said.
Snowpiercer season one filmed in Vancouver from August to late December 2018.

Season 2 filmed in Vancouver, starting last Fall and wrapping prematurely on March 12th when the film industry shut down amid coronavirus fears.

Snowpiercer season 2 — which added Sean Bean to its cast — had a week and a half of filming to do but is not expected to return when it is safe to do so. Word is production will fashion a season 2 finale from what they have.
