Updated:

David Ramsey makes his first appearance as John Diggle this season on the next Batwoman.

It’s one of five guest-starring appearances by Ramsey on Arrowverse shows — four as John Diggle on Batwoman, Superman & Lois, The Flash and Supergirl and another as a cowboy on Legends of Tomorrow.

Rebirth – When a familiar foe descends upon Gotham, Batwoman (Javicia Leslie) and Mary (Nicole Kang) find they must rely on each other more than ever. Alice (Rachel Skarsten) has a new mission – and gets an unexpected ally to join her. Also starring Dougray Scott, Meagan Tandy and Camrus Johnson. Michael Allowitz directed the episode written by Daniel Thomsen (216).

What is Diggle’s role on Batwoman? In the promo, Diggle randomly meets Lucas Fox (Camrus Johnson) in a Gotham City bar. That meeting leads to Diggle/Spartan helping Lucas, who was unjustly shot and almost killed by corrupt Crows agent Russell Tavaroff (Jesse Hutch) at the end of episode 14, into becoming Batwing in the season 2 finale.

Diggle as Spartan.

Camrus Johnson told EW that Diggle basically tells Lucas: “Be happy that you’re alive. Not many people would’ve survived this. The fact that you did means something [and] must have a huge purpose. Instead of sulking and being angry about what happened, you should channel that anger into something that will add good into the world.”

Where did we leave John Diggle in the Arrow series finale?

Opening a box which emitted a green light, widely interpreted by fans as an invitation to suit up as a Green Lantern.

But David Ramsey has made it clear in recent interviews that Diggle refuses that invitation. Why? Because Diggle doesn’t want to embark on something other worldly after losing his wife Lyla to the Anti-Monitor in Crisis on Infinite Earths. He got her back and his daughter Sara (who was lost in Flashpoint) but only because his best friend Oliver Queen sacrificed himself.

So Diggle says No and that refusal has consequences. What he does next is part of the story that will be told through his four appearances  as Diggle on Arrowverse shows, starting with Batwoman.

Ramsey also directed three episodes of Arrowverse shows this season — Superman & Lois 1×07 Man of Steel, Legends of Tomorrow 6×08  Stressed Western and Supergirl 6×12 The Guardian.
