LUCKY HANK Premieres With Bob Odenkirk as Cranky Academic at Railton College Played by UBC

Bob Odenkirk is a cranky academic whose life falls apart in a darkly comic way in AMC’s Lucky Hank series, which premieres tonight and was filmed mainly at the University of British Columbia as “mediocre” Railton College.

Lucky Hank is an eight episode mid-life crisis tale told in the first person by William Henry Devereaux, Jr. (Bob Odenkirk), the unlikely chairman of the English department in a badly underfunded college in the Pennsylvania rust belt.

The premiere has scenes of Bob Odenkirk’s Hank walking into the Hennings building at UBC and features a guest-turn from Vancouver’s Nancy Robertson (Corner Gas).

Lucky Hank is adapted from the Richard Russo novel Straight Man.

Lucky Hank filmed last Fall in metro Vancouver under the working title Straight Man, with UBC subbing in as Pennsylvania’s Railton College.

Diedrich Bader, who plays Hank’s best friend and racquet ball partner, enjoyed filming in the city.

Bob Odenkirk plays William Henry Devereaux, Jr.. aka Hank Devereaux.

Mireille Enos plays Hank’s wife Lily Devereaux, the vice-principal of a local high school in rural Pennsylvania.

Enos spent two seasons filming AMC’s The Killing in Metro Vancouver.

Olivia Scott Welch plays Hank and Lily’s daughter Julie, an only child who didn’t graduate from college, doesn’t have a job that pays her enough to live on but is accustomed to her parents’ lifestyle.

Diedrich Bader plays philosophy professor Tony Conigula, Hank’s closest friend. and a charming single guy.

Sara Amini plays Meg Quigley, an adjunct professor seeking tenure at Railton, where her alchoholic mother teaches as well. She works shifts at the local bar.

Cedric Yarbrough plays poetry professor Paul Rourke, who drives a red Camara and is on his third or fourth marriage.

Suzanne Cryer plays poetry professor Gracie DuBois.

Tom Bower as William Henry Devereaux, Sr, a retired, distinguished academic.
