Gary’s Goodbye: A MILLION LITTLE THINGS Series Finale

Gary’s Goodbye: A MILLION LITTLE THINGS Series Finale

A Million Little Things ended the way it began with the loss of a friend.

But there was a big difference. Jon (Ron Livingston)’s suicide in the series premiere came as a shock to these Boston friends and arguably shouldn’t have happened. Gary (James Roday Rodriguez)’s assisted suicide in the series finale came from his need to die with dignity, in the face of incurable lung cancer, surrounded by his friends at a “big fat” living memorial dinner.

No longer able to speak, Gary invoked the promise that Eddie (David Guintolis) and Rome (Romany Malco) had made to get him the pills he needed when the time came, by writing Rutledge on a board.

Maggie prepared the lethal tea and they retreated from the dinner which continued on without him, as his friends shared more Gary stories.

Gary’s headstone reads March 3, 2023 as his final day.

That’s the day A Million Little Things wrapped shooting its series finale in Vancouver, directed by creator DJ Nash and co-written by Nash and James Roday Rodriguez.

A Million Little things filmed five seasons and 87 episodes in metro Vancouver.

The series doesn’t end with Gary’s death, instead jumping ahead 15 years to the sons of Jon, Eddie, Gary and Rome at a Boston Bruins hockey game (at Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum with 150 extras and creator DJ Nash) taking a selfie just as their fathers had.
