The Handmaid’s Tale is in production on its sixth and final season in Toronto, with star Elizabeth Moss in the Director’s chair.
The Handmaid’s Tale is June’s story, adapted from and inspired by Margaret Atwood’s novel.
The Hulu series began in a dystopian future, with young wife and mother June Osborne (Elizabeth Moss) forced to live as a concubine to Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) and his wife Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) under the fundamentalist theocratic dictatorship of Gilead.
At the end of season 4, June killed Commander Fred Waterford, the man who’d enslaved her, and escaped to Toronto with her baby Nichole, fathered by her boyfriend Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) not the Commander. There she stays with her OG husband Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle).
How did season 5 end?
June is on the run again, after Luke violently attacked the Gilead sympathizer who tried to run down June with his truck. Luke turns himself in at the Toronto station so that June and baby Nichole can board a train of Gilead refugees headed west to Vancouver. On the train, the former handmaid sees her adversary Serena Waterford and baby son Noah among the refugees in a full circle moment.
“You got a diaper?” Serena asks.
What will happen in season 6?
“June is going to figure out who she is and who she’s going to be for the rest of her life…. the fight is not just about one individual,” Elizabeth Moss told Elle.
In Season 1, we bore no more. In Season 2, we reclaimed our name. In Season 3, we set ourselves free. In Season 4, we prayed together. In Season 5, you’ll see that some sins can’t be washed away. And as to Season 6… well, you’ll just have to wait and see.
