Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. chose to pair a massive horde of Infected attacking the walled community of Jackson.with the death of Pedro Pascal’s fan favourite character Joel Miller.at the hands of Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby Anderson.
Episode two, directed by Mark Mylod, took more than a month and a half to shoot, reports EW.

The scene in which Abby comes down the mountain and gets attacked by the Infected and the fence starts collapsing and she has to crawl through that to the end where Joel find her, that was all done up at Whistler in a snowstorm. And that was really difficult. — Joel Whist SPFX supervisor.

The Britannia Mine Museum in Britannia Beach (next to the big Jackson set) played the interior of Copper Mine where Abby learns that the man who rescued her from the horde is Joel — the man she came to kill.
