Lew Einstein (Matthew Gray Gubler), the brilliant but directionless great grandson of Albert Einstein spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor at Princeton until his bad boy antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective solve her most puzzling cases.

The pilot shot in Toronto and CBS picked up Einstein to series in the Spring of 2025 but decided to delay the launch of the show a year to give it more time for development, like it did with Fire Country spinoff Sheriff Country — i.e. more scripts banked, more efficiencies in production and scheduling and more time to promote the new show.

But the delay reportedly cost Einstein its female lead Rosa Salazar, who played the local police detective in the Toronto-shot pilot. Salazar asked that her option not be picked up and her role will be recast.

The CBS procedural-with-a-twist is adapted from the German series Einstein starring Tom Beck.

Monk creator Andy Breckman serves as showrunner and fellow Monk alum Randy Zisk directed the pilot in Toronto..
