Gossip Girl and Friday Night Lights on a boat?
Netflix’s new rowing romance Crew Girl, starring Bet’s Miku Martineau as a teen girl who becomes the coxswain on the dysfunctional bays rowing team, debuts September 10th.
Crew Girl tells the story of Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau), a gifted 16-year-old single sculler whose promising future is derailed by a family scandal. Forced to relocate to the East Coast with her Mom (Jessica Paré), Teagan hopes to have a fresh start at the prestigious Easton Prep. But once there, she finds that she’s not just the outcast newcomer — she’s stuck on land. There’s no girls’ rowing team at Easton. Her only way onto the water? Taking the helm as coxswain for Easton’s notoriously chaotic boys’ varsity crew.
Thrown into a world of old money and ruthless competition, Teagan has to convince an entire team to trust her leadership — and each other. As she fights to reclaim her rowing dreams, manage the chaos of the crew, and navigate her family’s growing troubles, Teagan finds herself drawn into a rivalry of her own. She winds up caught between the arrogant team captain, Josh Regis (Samuel Braun), and Cam Dillinger (Kyle Clark), a quiet but fiercely determined local who refuses to be underestimated.
Filming in Victoria, BC:
Crew Girl filmed last Fall in Victoria, BC ln many recognizable locations, like downtown Sidney and its waterfront as the fictional Eagle’s Cove, Massachusetts.
Hatley Castle played Easton Prep.
Rowing scenes were shot on Elk/Beaver Lake and the Gorge Waterway.
Camera crew used a floating camera barge to get rowing shots with a techno crane and sometimes towed the boat to get tight shots. Crew also used drone cameras to get footage of the cast rowing on their own. Altogether cast sometimes logged up to 8 or 10 hours a day on the water.
