Aaron Sorkin, who won an Oscar for writing the script to the 2010 feature The Social Network — which told the story of how Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg founded the social media giant Facebook — wrote the script for The Social Reckoning and will direct this time.
The sequel is inspired by The Facebook Files, the explosive Wall Street Journal investigative series by Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) that revealed how Facebook, under the leadership of CEO Mark Zuckerberg (Jeremy Strong) and COO Sheryl Sandberg, prioritized profit and growth over user safety.

Whistleblower Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison) provided the internal documents that exposed troubling practices. These included Facebook’s awareness that Instagram harmed teen girls’ mental health, the existence of “XCheck,” a system that shielded VIP users—including politicians and celebrities— from enforcement, and the platform’s role in fueling misinformation and violence globally.
