In Season 1, [Toranaga] didn’t become a shōgun yet, So, I’d like to see him become the leader of Japan. That is my hope. — Hiroyuki Sanada to Deadline: Hollywood..
Creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo and their writers room finished scripts for all ten episodes of season 2 in February and started planning how to make the new season.
We’re coming out of the writers room now. We’re also done with the 10 episodes, and we have our finale now. That’s allowing us to start figuring out how we’re going to shoot this. But we’re very excited about the plan. — Justin Marks to Deadline: Hollywood.
Season one, which covered all of James Cavell’s epic novel, won pretty much every award it was nominated for at the Emmys, Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards and SAG Awards.
Filming locations in Vancouver:
A big Shōgun location in season one was Minaty Bay on the Sea to Sky Highway to Whistler as the fishing village of Ajiro.

The bay is a popular private filming location for many Vancouver productions like Resident Alien and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The nearby gravel pit is currently the site of The Last of Us’s massive Jackson set.

Another Shōgun filming location was the RV parking lot at the Swiss Canadian Mountain Range Association Gun Club in Coquitlam.,where upper Ajiro was built withJohn Blackthorne’s house.

The biggest Shōgun set was feudal Osaka at the closed-down Flavelle sawmill on the Port Moody waterfront. Crew built jetties into the water and fishermen’s houses that wrapped around the inlet.

Noblemen’s houses.

This is also the location of the entrance to Osaka castle.

The Osaka set is still standing in Port Moody three years after Shogun wrapped and used by other productions, primarily Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender which turned it into its Earth Kingdom.

Ten years on in the timeline, Toranaga’s rising city of Edo (the future Tokyo) will play a bigger role and may need its own standing set in season 2.
