What a difference a year makes! — Midnight Madness programmer.
A year after Obsession’s explosive World Premiere at TIFF’s Midnight Madness, writer/director Curry Barker and his star Inde Navarrrette sat down at the Toronto festival to talk about how their lives have changed.
Obsession logline:
After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush(Inde Navarrette)’s heart, a hopeless romantic (Michael Johnston) finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.
Made for less than $1 million, the indie horror romance was snatched up by Focus Features for $15 million. After some expansion of the story and reshoot,s Obsession released in May and went on to gross over $500 million worldwide –, bigger than Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Curry Barker:
After the unprecedented success of Obsession ,youtube filmmaker Curry Barker, now 26, signed a multi-million-dollar deal with Universal and Blumhouse for his third feature.
Inde Navarrette:
Inde Navarrrette’s biggest role before Obsession was playing Lana Lang’s daughter Sarah for four seasons on the filmed-in-Vancouver DC series Superman & Lois.
Obsession catapulted her to international fame..
Her next big role is Rogue in Marvel’s new X-Men movies.
The actress, now 25, also plans to direct some projects herself.
