Vancouver’s own whydunit crime drama Motive premieres season three on CTV tonight with the return of  Detective Angie Flynn (Kristin Lehman). She left the Homicide team at the end of last season after her partner Oscar Vega (Louis Ferreira) had to cover for her and shoot someone to save her life. Six months later, she’s ready to come back but things have moved on. For example, Detective Lucas (Brendan Penny) is giving orders and won’t relinquish her desk. He’s even on the season 3  promo poster.

Known for its bold cinematic style, Motive is unusual for two reasons: Vancouver plays itself not somewhere else and Motive is a whydunit not a whodunit. At the top of each episode, we learn who the Killer and the Victim are and then follow along with the detectives as they solve the murder and uncover the reasons behind it.

Lauren Holly, Brendan Penny, Louis Ferreira, Kristin Lehman and Warren Christopher.

In its first season, Motive exploded to become Canada’s top new homegrown scripted drama. And it grew even bigger in its second season, averaging more than one million viewers an episode. Credit goes to the unique format, the lead actors, the choice to make “ordinary people” the killers and victims (often played by BC actors) instead of gang leaders or thugs and the visual style.

In season three, some big American TV names play Killers, Victims and Suspects: Victor Garber ( The Flash/Alias), Alexis Bledel (Mad Men/Gilmore Girls), Dylan Walsh, Chris Klein, C. Thomas Howell, Ally Sheedy, Billy Boyd and Charles Martin Smith .
