THE LAST OF US Season 2: Making Nanaimo An Overgrown Seattle Wasteland

The tall grass arrived in Nanaimo this morning.

The Last of Us season 2’s Greens Department is busy placing clumps of tall grass and winding vines around lampposts on Skinner Street, as part of Nanaimo’s transformation into an overgrown, post-apocalyptic Seattle neighbourhood.

Skinner Street is now closed.

Wharf Street closed earlier in the week as did the part of Diana Krall Plaza that fronts on Commercial Street.

You can see the big grass delivery this morning in front of the set being built in Diana Krall Plaza.

Greens work and set decoration on Commercial Street starts soon with some businesses closing Thursday and others closing Friday for between five to eight days.

Cameras will roll on Monday, May 13th and Tuesday, May 14th. See the notice at bottom of this post.

Despite all the work going on, the Nanaimo sequence is expected to be a small part of one episode in season 2 of The Last of Us.

What will downtown Nanaimo look like for the shoot?

You can see how debris, patches of tall grass, grimy abandoned cars, and dirtied up signage transformed Alexander Street in downtown Vancouver into post-apocalyptic Seattle last week.

The Last of Us is filming in downtown Vancouver again this weekend in Oceanic Plaza.

What is The Last of Us?

The Last of Us takes place 20 + years after modern civilization has been destroyed by a fungal pandemic. Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle teen Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

In season 2, we meet some new characters like Ellie’s new friend Dina (Isabela Merced) and scout Jesse (Young Mazino) in Jackson, Wyoming, where Joel and Ellie settle after the events of season one.

In season 2, we also meet a group of former Fireflies who’ve joined the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) militia group in Seattle: soldier Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever), who’s seeking vengeance for someone she loved, soldier Manny (Danny Ramirez), doctor Mel (Ariela Barer), military medic Nora (Tati Gabrielle) and Owen (Spencer Lord).
