On Friday, A&E shared a creepy new poster and teaser with Entertainment Weekly’s Inside TV. In the Motherly Love teaser, the camera slowly zooms in like a voyeur on teenage Norman (Freddie Highmore) and his possessive mother Norma (Vera Farigma) sitting side-by-side on a bed. You want to scream, Get a Room!, except they’re already in one and this is a mother and son. Is this the relationship which turns young Norman into the killer who stuffed his mother in the classic Alfred Hitchcock horror film? BATES MOTEL Set in Aldergrove is Spitting Image of Alfred Hitchcock’s Set in Psycho – Updated

Update: Bates Motel set. September 2016. Production built the roof for the second season.

The Bates Motel set out in Aldergrove on 272nd Street near the U.S. border is the spitting image of the motel set in Alfred Hitchcock’s horror classic Psycho, except for the missing top of the Bates house which will be CGIed in post-production. When I arrived mid-afternoon to see A&E’s upcoming series filming, only Mike Vogel’s deputy Sheriff seemed to be inside one of the motel rooms. When he crossed the road from set on his way to craft services I apologized for misidentifying him in yesterday’s blogpost about the Steveston shoot on the fishing boat.

If I’d stayed in Aldergrove I could have seen the Bates house on the hill lit up for a night shoot by a light on a hoist near 272nd Street and a balloon light in the garden  It would have looked scary as hell but I had to start heading back to Vancouver. This set is such a long way out that this will have to be my one and only visit unfortunately.

A&E’s contemporary Psycho prequel Bates Motel  focuses on a younger version of Psycho movie killer Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) in present-day Oregon and explores his relationship with his unhinged mother (Vera Farmiga) as he approaches his evil destiny.  Lost co-showrunner Carlton Cuse penned most of the 10 episodes which are  described as a cross between Twin Peaks and Smallville.

[Update: At the start of filming the motel sign was Seafairer Motel as in the original Psycho but changed to Bates Motel once this reimagined Bates mother and son bought it]

SHOOT: SUPERNATURAL 8×11 LARP and the Real Girl Set in Coquitlam’s Mundy Park

Best LARP Ever? And I missed it. Supernatural filmed for several days on its LARP (live action role playing) set in Coquitlam’s Mundy Park  this past week and last. Locals walking their dogs told me they spotted both Jared Padalecki’s Sam and Jensen Ackles’s Dean in among all the background performers dressed in medieval garb for what the sign says is Michigan’s largest LARPing game: MoonDoor, The Battle of Kingdoms. As disappointed as I am to have missed people dressed up like knights for the eleventh episode of season eight, what I’m really kicking myself for is not going out in the pouring rain to try to catch a glimpse of geek goddess Felicia Day (Eureka, Dr. Horrible’s Singalong Blog)’s return as adorkable hacker Charlie.

LARP and the Real Girl (a clever pun on the Ryan Gosling flick Lars and the Real Girl) also features a new character Gerard, a LARPer who goes too far playing this medieval game. Season Eight showrunner Jeremy Carver told TV sites that Supernatural will approach the LARPing universe differently than it has in the past. I look forward to seeing what they do on screen.

BATES MOTEL Sets Up Woodchuck Festival in Fort Langley for 1×02 – Updated

Updated March 25, 2013: Woodchuck Festival used for Norma (Vera Farmiga)’s clandestine date with Deputy Sheriff Shelby (Mike Vogel).

A&E’s contemporary Psycho prequel Bates Motel set up a White Pine Bay Woodchuck Festival at the Fort Langley Community Centre for an overnight shoot last Thursday night. Bates Motel focuses on a younger version of Psycho movie killer Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) in present-day Oregon and explores his relationship with his unhinged mother (Vera Farmiga) as he approaches his evil destiny.

The 10-episode series, scripted mainly by Lost’s Carlton Cuse, is described as a cross between Twin Peaks and Smallville. Certainly, the White Pine Bay Woodchuck Festival has a Twin Peaks vibe. All that’s needed is some cherry pie, a damn fine cup of coffee and a Log Lady to complete the homage.

SHOOT: Look What FRINGE Did to the West End’s Sherburn Building For 5×06 – Updated

Look what Fringe crew did to the West End’s Sherburn Building yesterday. It didn’t look like this thirteen months ago when Fringe filmed scenes for Subject 9, season four’s pivotal episode when Joshua Jackson’s Peter Bishop returned to existence. Yesterday’s scenes, like most of season five, appear to be set in 2036 when Observer overlords rule the world, there’s a lot of dirt, decrepit cars and dead vegetation and Joshua Jackson’s amber-preserved Peter Bishop is a resistance fighter dressed in fashionable black [Update: along with Anna Torv’s Olivia and Jasika Nicole’s Astrid. The trio are  following John Noble’s Walter Bishop who’s gone rogue in a search for a child Observer he hid inside this building in  a pocket universe twenty years before.]
